HOW IT HAPPENED:
My lover - gone
My husband - gone
My house and dogs - gone
and that is not even the worst
my will to live - gone…
It all happened so fast. It was going to be just “ a bit of fun”. Initially neither of us were going to leave their spouses.
And then we fell in love...deeply.
The agreement was that we would keep the relationship a secret until both of us were “free”.
I still recall throwing my last make-up in a bag and my husband asking one last time for me not to go through with it. Confusion, hurt and disappointment trembling in his voice, “don’t do it”. I close the door without looking back.
He had his chance, right?
Being head-over-heels I needed only my clothes and personal belongings for my new life ahead. Leaving everything else behind.
I was ALL in.
For a split second I wondered if my new found love would go through with it. I brushed that off since he told me he loved me, repeatedly.
I put the hastily packed box down in my new empty apartment to answer the phone.
Butterflies in my tummy as I saw my lover's name flash on the phone.
His voice was controlled and low: “It’s over. I’m sorry. I cannot go through with it. I tried. I will always love you…Bye.”
Words that will haunt me forever.
With a shaking hand I reached for the nearest chair to prevent my legs from folding in underneath me.
peep, peep, peep..
The phone slipped out of my hand on the floor without me being able to speak. Tears ran uncontrollably down my face as I stared in disbelief at the blank wall in front of me.
Eventually I picked up my phone from the floor.
But who could I call? I have pushed everyone aside during the affair to spend every stolen minute with him.
And now I was lonely and alone.
I spent the whole night crying. And the night after. And the night after that. I am forced to put in sick leave.
Surely Netflix and red wine cures all?
After weeks of still not being able to eat or sleep properly, I go see a psychiatrist.
Since there are real risks involved using hypnosis to forget, I settle for the pills. The sleeping tablets and antidepressants make me sleep like a rock. Like a zombie I go through the motions of the day. Emotionless, joyless and loveless.
The only time my doorbell rings is when Amazon delivers another pair of shoes I won’t keep.
Night after night I read his saved love texts again and again.
I spend hours on Facebook in an attempt to see what’s going on in his life.
What was he doing to save his marriage whilst I was hurting so much?
Crying myself again to sleep...
The morning does not bring a better day.
The drive to work reminds me of all your secret meeting spots. Every song on the radio makes me cry. My empty wedding finger on the steering wheel makes me cry.
Is this what dying of a broken heart feels like? Is this the ultimate price I deserve to pay as “the other woman”?
I used to think so...
After the affair I felt used and worthless. On top of that, I suffered a broken heart.
I spent years unknowingly hating myself for what I have done. All hope lost that I’d ever have a healthy relationship in the future…
All I wanted to do was to forget. Forget that it ever happened, forget him and forget this pain.
And yet, I could not stop thinking about it.
This was the beginning of a long journey into healing, transforming and creating a beautiful life with a wonderful partner that I now teach and share with the world.
Before I get into very practical things to do, I want to point to something that I did NOT know back then that caused the pain to prolong much longer than needed. You can read about this here
How to get over an affair:
Create a safe place and dedicated time for grieving.
This is very important. If you have lost your partner and the person you had an affair with, you will have to acknowledge the double impact or this might catch you off guard. Remember, you had a whole other existence with your partner/husband that included friends, family, familiar habits to name just a few. With the excitement of an affair, these things take a backseat until the thrill of the affair is over, and then loss sets in -EVEN if you believe it was for the better and your choice to get out of that relationship. Our energy gets temporarily entangled with our experiences which includes people and places. The disentangling leaves gaps in our own energy field, and the emotional response could be emptiness, loss, despair, a feeling of not belonging that is very unsettling. This is part of the grieving and healing process providing you don't lose yourself in it. The process will create space for the new to fill it if you don't fill it with complex stories that will prevent your future joy to take its rightful space. You have a wonderful opportunity here to make this a sacred experience by entering into it with a greater awareness than that of a victim.
Chose a place where you will be undisturbed and feel safe (maybe a sofa with a comfy pillow and blanket or a beanbag in the corner of your room, or study? I would avoid the bed because it should be kept for repair and rest and in my opinion, sleep is holy!)
Decide how long (maybe 90-120 min in accordance with your emotional state) you want to spend here daily. Later on you may reduce the time and commit not to stay there any longer than your allocated time.
Whether you have to look at old photos, play “your song” or read love letters is up to you, just get real deep into the feeling state of your situation right now.
Be very present with your body. Close your eyes. Scan yourself by moving your focus slowly from your toes, into your feet, akles, calves (you get the idea), all the way up until you have done your whole body. Remember arms and hands too. Paying attention to every muscle as your focus flows over it, including the facial muscles and jaw.
Allow EVERYTHING
If you break out in tears, want to yell into a pillow, or beat the living feathers out of it, now is the time.
Return to your body scan. Notice if there is relief or simply notice any tension.
Notice the thoughts coming up. Don't judge or fight them.
Notice the connection between thoughts and the feelings they bring
Notice where you FEEL them in your body.
Notice how the feeling intensifies, and then wanes. Up and down.
Allow the process to unfold for as many times as required.
Be mindful that this creates space for the new person you are becoming thanks to this experience.
Avoid giving this any meaning other than your experience in THIS MOMENT, the physical sensations.
When you feel settled, spend 5-10 minutes on a loving kindness meditation; you can learn about it here.
Commit to yourself that this is the only time you allow yourself to fall apart so that you work cleverly with your energy during the normal course of the day.
Start and Grow your gratitude list
I realise you don't think you have anything to be grateful for right now, but this is a crucial step in changing your energy that has EVERYTHING to do with your future and current happiness. Make this a creative outlet exercise. Get yourself a beautiful diary, or notebook. Use any mediums you feel drawn to like crayons, pens, paint or pictures. We will use one page per day.
Write the date at the top and “today I am grateful for”...
Express in whichever way you feel appropriate on the page the thing/person/idea you are grateful for. If you can only be grateful for your pet, stick a photo, or draw it or write down how you feel about their love for you.
Expand your gratitude journal daily by remembering that your basic needs like clothing, food and a warm bed are indeed luxuries that many across the world do not have.
Really FEEL the appreciation of what you are grateful for, embody it. If it is difficult, go to your early pages or connect with nature and get into the feeling.
Your physical ability to breathe, swallow and so on should NEVER be taken for granted. Avoid thinking like “I wish I was rather dead instead of this pain”. I personally have seen life draining from a person, this is NOT what you want for yourself only because of heartache, take my word! Get appreciation for every little gift of life.
There are always Angels on our path. Did you notice the homeless man smiling at you, or the cashier handing your groceries with a friendly warm greeting, or a stranger holding the door open for you? Use daily awareness to help you grow your journal.
(Don't think this is just positive thinking, this is a powerful physical exercise. The HeartMath Institute has amazing research on this. When we cultivate feelings of gratitude, appreciation, compassion or love, the heart sends signals via the vagus nerve to the brain and they start to have coherence which in turn has tremendous health benefits and all round positive results on one's life. )
Once this practice has become routine, and your “falling apart/grieving” practises are less intense and half of the time it used to take, I invite you to think about what could you be grateful for BECAUSE of the affair and breakup? Only one thing per day. Did you experience yourself for the first time being adventurous in the bedroom? Did you get to feel desired like never before? Did you get to express yourself in creative and romantic ways? The gratitude goes to the ENERGETIC essence you now have accumulated into your being (you have changed and most likely grew in your desires, needs and contributions).
Keep adding day by day to your journal until you have milked every drop of honey out of the affair experience. You may list qualities you enjoyed from your lover, like intense listening and sharing. Make sure HE is not the object of your appreciation, but what you took away from the interaction, like being the centre of attention. You are doing this correctly if you are filled with the positive effect/feeling and not running into negative stories like “but it is over now, or he is gone…”.
Now do the same for the relationship you gave up to have the affair. Enough time and healing should have taken place to look back without the emotional cloud of being in a heated affair or being angry. This is extremely powerful to move forward and not have remaining energy blocks linked to this relationship. (In the rare occasion that you are working things out, this can be turned into building your relationship anew by growing appreciation for your partner and avoiding falling in the trap of complacency ever again.)
Time to be grateful for who you have become. I know I became an unwavering truth teller. I vowed not to take my partner for granted and learned to speak up for my needs. What about compassion, tolerance, being less judgemental, more trusting, warm, more transparent, vulnerable, independent, learning a new skill with your new free time? These might become more clear over a longer period of time and I invite you to stay open to this.
Keep an attitude of gratitude AS the biggest gift to yourself and see your life turn around!
Design your day
NOT doing this is the biggest mistake you can make. By simply going through the motions of the day in accordance with your mood will surely make you suffer. Getting clear and intentional is easier than what you think and completely within your grasp despite your world looking like it is never going to be in HD colour again-just follow the steps ;)
Use all the negative and awful feelings you are experiencing as guidance. When you feel sad, write down the word joy. When you feel lonely, write down the word connection.
Think of all the feelings you want to experience even if it sounds like a pipe dream right now.
Get extremely practical. Look at your list of words and decide on just two of them per day that you could experience, for instance joy. I bet you can still feel joy listening to your shake-that-booty song from high school! You can ask your best friend to tell you what makes you her best friend, and be prepared to REALLY take it in and feel the connection. Get the idea? There are uncountable possibilities that bring us similar feelings, think out of the box.
Prepare a game plan to execute this. For instance, have the song downloaded on your phone for when you do your make-up, or walk to the bus etc. Or schedule a dedicated time to have that call with your girlfriend.
Walk your talk
None of this will do you any good without execution!
The Universe rewards action, so go shake your booty for the whole song and FEEL the joy. If not the first time, play it again.
Let go off the stories in your head and FEEL the intentional emotion with as much awareness as possible. In the case of getting the frequency of connection, allow yourself to be undistracted and fully present in the conversation with your friend-stay in your heart!
Do your best to keep the good vibration for the remainder of the day.
Repetition through the day cannot be underestimated here and will speed up your healing.
At the end of the day, choose two new emotions from your list for the next day and repeat the process. You might get internal guidance during your “melt down period” on which to choose, trust yourself.
Before you know it, you would be experiencing the miracle that you are because YOU gave the gift of love to yourself…
Sometimes it is a little hard to go at it on our own and that is where I can help.
Or, you can fill out the quiz to see where you are on your healing journey. This way you could be updated with new articles in the future too ;)
