It has been 45 minutes since the call started. “I hate people, they are all dumb, the world is crap…!”
I have not been able to get two words in since the “downloading” started. This was my intake call with a new client. By now I know how futile it is to try interjecting and let her get it “out of the system” so to speak.
Just like the little girl in the picture, my words would have been thrown back into the abyss or at very least distorted. When someone’s mind is so sped up, the best service one can give is presence. Little wonder by now the person has broken out in tears of despair.
We take thinking and having thoughts for granted. You may read about the nature of thoughts here.
The truth about the process of “thinking” is that little cascades of chemicals and hormones flush our physical bodies with every thought - we FEEL our thinking nearly simultaneously. When we have not developed acute self awareness yet, we might not see this truth yet.
The faster, crazier and darker the thinking, the worse we feel. Ask anyone suffering anxiety and depression. This in turn suppresses what we innately (we are born like this) should be experiencing when thinking has slowed right down…peace, tranquility, deep connection, love and all is well.Ask anyone that reached the “zone” through extreme sport, art or meditation or a little child playing in the sandpit (although he/she would not understand that you are feeling anything BUT being content).
The trouble a lot of us are experiencing is that we are convinced that the world “out there” is causing us to experience this accelerated/inner state of being. Anger, frustration and stress. It sure looks like that at first glance. And then we innocently attempt to change or downright resist what IS-out there!
We are creative as humans and there are many techniques to accomplish this: numbing with substances, distraction via social media, shopping, sex or distortion by talking endlessly about our problems leaving us with no energy to move ourselves out of it in a productive way. Plus, the brain closes the loop momentarily thinking it solved the issue by just talking about them. (We all know how gossip brings only more problems!) Not realising we have the power and ability to slow down the speed of our thinking by simply noticing the connection between having thoughts and feeling them.
For most of us when I say “Root Canal procedure” or “white chalk screeching on a black board”, we have a little physical jolt! And in reality you are merely reading words here… Can you see the power of feeling our thoughts, even those we imagine? In a world of must do‘s and should do‘s and go,go go, we rarely dedicate the time to slow down and experience how good we really can feel in the moment.
Being present. Being alive.
I see this happen for my clients. Maybe not after the 1st or 2nd conversation, but definitely eventually. It is quite magical to see them softening…
Using the power of visualization, words and our hearing, I include a FREE introduction meditation of only 8 minutes to help you slow down your mind briefly.
Enjoy!
